1. Agriculture
Tobacco is grown in some southern and western regions of Ukraine. The area of tobacco production declined from 21,700 hectares in 1980 to 0.62 in 2005 (Table 1). In the late 1990s, this area was about 3-4 thousand hectares, which constituted about 0.01% of area cultivated for agriculture crops.

Tobacco production in Ukraine was very high in the 1980s (28,190 tons in 1987). Then it declined every year. In 2005 it was 490 tons of raw tobacco produced in Ukraine or 1.7% of the 1987 level.
The yield per hectare was about 0.8 tones in the early 1980s, which then increased to 1.5 in 1987 and declined to 0.67 in 1996. Recently the average yield per hectare was about 0.8 tones.
