Tobacco-related mortality
There was no specific research on tobacco related mortality. So we use the method proposed by Peto et al. (1994). In this book the tobacco-related mortality for 1990 was calculated as 97,000 and the projected mortality for 1995 was calculated as 107,000. To be conservative we used for calculation tobacco-related mortality in 1995 and 1996 not the projected coefficients but the same as for 1990. The results
(Table 6, Table 7) show that the calculations based on real mortality figures give higher mortality - 123,000 (16 % of all deaths) for 1995 and 110,000 (15% of all deaths) in 1999. Some expert believed that cancer mortality in Ukraine is under-registered by political reasons.
